Sunflower seeds
So I got some Bigs Sunflower Seeds to review for the magazine, and, I feel stupid, but I have to ask:

How are you supposed to eat sunflower seeds?

I mean, they're all covered with flavor (bacon, pickle, etc.) which seems to be just sprayed on the shell. The inner part just tastes like a sunflower seed.

But if you eat the whole thing, shell and all, it feels like you're chewing a mouthful of twigs.

I guess maybe you're supposed to crack them in your teeth so you taste the shell but don't eat it? If so, what's the point in eating the tiny seed inside? Are these for people who like chewing and spitting but don't actually care to fill their stomachs?

Help me, LJ Genie.

It seems to be that people suck on the shell until the salt (or in this case, the special flavor) is all gone ... then they crack the shell, spit it out, and swallow the seed.

Not a fan, myself. But that's the way I understand the process.

I concur with the above comment. However, I've only ever eaten sunflower seeds already devoid of shells, so I can't say from personal experience.

I wanted to note that this made me want some roasted pumpkin seeds.

Judging from the plate of sunflower seed husks usually seen after my wife has an extended gaming session, the first comment seems to be the agreed upon way.

Sunflower seeds are the non-addictive tobacco. Also, the unsweet Big League Chew.

The best way to eat sunflower seeds is to take a small handful, put them in the side of your mouth, and suck on them. One at a time, you transfer it to your front teeth and crack the shell. You then pop the seed out with your tongue, or with a combination of your tongue and front teeth. You then chew on the kernel with the back teeth on the opposite side of your mouth from the uncracked seeds. Switch the sides of your mouth when one side gets fatigued.

The other day our local baseball team's color man described the point of sunflower seeds and bubble gum during a game. For one thing, it's something to do when you're out there on the field and the ball never comes your way. Also, I guess when you play baseball over salivation can be a problem, but sunflower seeds tend to dry out your mouth. And when they've had enough of the dry mouth they alternate between seeds and bubble gum to get the saliva flowing again.
