Laptop hard drives
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a 2.5" laptop hard drive, with old-timey ATA/IDE connection, in 320 GB?

The largest one I've been able to find is 250 GB.

Or, and this seems even more unlikely, is there some kind of tiny adapter widget that will let a SATA drive live inside a laptop with an old-timey ATA/IDE interface?

(I know I can add external drives, but the more crap you need to carry, the less awesome it is to have a laptop.)

Fujitsu recently announced a 320gb 2.5" drive, but it's SATA. Most new HDD development will be too, so whatever is on the market for ATA/IDE is likely all you'll get.

There are adapters for IDE -> SATA, but not that you could use in a laptop really. They're usually kinda bulky, or at least bulky enough not to work in most laptop HDD cradles.

I'm afraid there isn't a product that meets all of these qualifications at this time.
  • 2.5 HDD
  • 320 GB
  • IDE
  • Internal

This drive looked promising, since it was in the 2.5" and PATA internal categories, but it was miscategorized, and is in fact 3.5".

There is also no adapter to fit in a notebook.

Best option would be going with the 250 GB, right now.

Sorry.

I thought that was the case. Thanks for the confirmation.

Neat, but no. I'd need something tiny enough to fit inside the laptop.
