Comedy failure
Today I tagged along with Amanda to a party populated with hip young animators.

A girl there was talking about how her boyfriend loves to sit in his car. She said that even when he's at home, he'll often sit in his car and listen to the radio or read. She also said that he's actually gone to parties with her where she goes inside but he just waits in the car.

To which I replied, "Who are you dating, Gary Numan?"

The party went silent as everyone just looked at me with vacant bewilderment before restarting the conversation with an unspoken, "Aaaaaanyway..."

Come on, that was gold. Right? Old people, back me up here...

Does he sit in the car with the engine running? If so, that's extremely wasteful and it makes him is a horrible person. Anyway, I would've chuckled at the Gary Numan comment. I would scratch out that word "hip" from your description because any hipster worth his/her weight in vinyl knows who the fuck Gary Numan is.

I'm picturing a Zucker-esque scene where everybody freezes, the phone stops mid-ring and the baby stops crying.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it went down.

Oh man
I've had to deal with quite a few 'hip young animators' over the years at Wrap Parties.
They're...
um
well you know

You are a genius, unappreciated in his time...and apparently at social gatherings.

If it helps, this is at least twice as funny to hear about than it would have been had they all laughed and exclaimed how good at references you are.

It WAS an awesome reference, and it's not your fault they're stupid. But I think it's funnier this way.

It's comedy gold.

That's the problem with dealing with people too young to gte your early 80's references.

Happens to me all the time.

Obviously I am hip. Very hip. EXTREMELY HIP.

Because I don't think I know who Gary Numan is. Do I? Would I know him if I saw him/heard him?

OH! Oh yeah, sure!

I'll bet I thought that video, with all the 'effects', was the bomb back in the day. Now? Maybe notsomuch. But AWESOME unintentionally comedic freezes, hohohoyeah. And wow - the Also You'd Like These Videos at the bottom of the box: fun!

If I would have gotten the joke, it would have indeed been funny.

I also didn't recognize the name, but I know the song. I think I knew it from a remake, actually. I guess it must be right on the line of your age and mine. Couple year margin for Numan references. I wouldn't expect it to work everywhere.

I recall a time at Ringling when the kids around the lunch table with me didn't get a reference I made from a James Taylor song. It got worse. None of the ~9 people at the table had even HEARD of him. I'm not saying they needed to be fans, but the name was as unknown to them as the pop stars they listen to were to me. I chose that year to finally graduate.

I was working with an 18 year old EMT who had a very short haircut, dyed very light, almost white blonde. A nurse at the ER said he looked like Billy Idol.

When I laughed, he looked at me and asked "Who's Billy Idol?"

And then I cried.
